Streetwear fashion first became popular in the 1990’s combining comfortable, yet trendy clothing including graphic tees, hoodies, sweatpants and expensive sneakers. Streetwear takes inspiration from
hip-hop culture and it’s never been hotter than the past few months as we experience a universal pandemic, steering us off the runway.
Many of our youth and social influencers made streetwear an important part of pop culture in the past few decades. Everyone is getting in on the action in the fashion industry from mainstream sportswear brands to high fashion luxury brands.
The main characteristics of streetwear styling is comfort, scarcity, style and contemporary art. Comfort as in athleisure staples like sweatshirts and joggers. This culture is all about limited-edition items and not mass-produced pieces. Bomber jackets and workwear fit nicely into this trend as well as graphic tees. Many of these pieces are sanctioned collaborations with top luxury brands such as Dior, Off-White and Louis Vuitton.
4 Tips for Styling Your Streetwear
Buying and selling limited-edition items is a great start. While it’s not for everyone, there are still ways to incorporation the fashion to your look.
- Invest in sneakers. If you have just one clothing item to kick your streetwear into gear it’s sneakers. Invest in a good pair that can be worn with a lot of different looks.
- Brand loyalty. Don’t overdo it. Instead, select one single brand logo and work around it with your workwear and athletic clothing for a single look.
- Play with proportions. Streetwear aficionados often wear baggy denim, oversized sweatshirts and other loose-fitting garments.
- Be yourself. While you can fold in some of these fashion statements, know that genuine streetwear is all about being yourself. Try different combinations and have fun with it. Be comfortable.
