Franklin, Nashville and Middle Tennessee are rapidly changing in the blink of an eye. Growth! One of the best things about growth is people like Savannah Yarborough and her business called SAVAS. You see Savannah and her downtown Nashville team is first designing, then making some of the finest custom-made coats for men and women in the world!

She’s an Alabama native, schooled first at the Academy of Art in San Francisco then at the prestigious London Art School of Central Saint Martins and has been rocking the fashion world from Nashville since 2012. But you don’t have to believe me, Savannah and her work have been featured in publications like GQ, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal just to name a few. As Christmas rapidly approaches, she’s working her magic on holiday orders, but Savannah did take the time to sit down and answer a few questions about her “Rock Star Quality” clothing.

JTT: What recommendations do you for a first- time client who wants to get a jacket made?

SY: We design each garment for the individual client. Sometimes it is helpful to have an image of jackets that you like, and the type of style you are interested in. While we don’t make copies of other designs, Inspiration is always helpful! You can also pick from our collection of styles and customize them.

JTT: What fabric should I select, or do you suggest for custom made clothing?

SY: We have a revolving collection of leathers that are developed just for us by our tannery partners in Italy. All of these we test and understand the wearability and how they will evolve over time as you wear them. We can source specific colors as well.

JTT: What design do you recommend for a first-time customer?

SY: The best way to know the best style for you is to try them all on to get a feel for a good silhouette for your body and attitude. Each person is different, but we love when someone finds the perfect style for them and it is different than what they originally were thinking would be the one.

JTT: How many fittings do you usually need and how long does this take?

SY: For our Made-to-Measure program, we only require one canvas fitting. For our bespoke program, we typically do 2-3 canvas fittings.

JTT: Please describe client involvement in the process?

SY: All of our processes begin with a meeting with Savannah. The bespoke process is a bit more thorough, in which you collaborate with Savannah for an individual garment design meeting, discussing your lifestyle, how you plan to wear it and specific details that you would like. Measurements are then taken, and a paper pattern is made from scratch with your measurements, followed by 2-3 canvas fittings. The made-to-measure process is done by selecting one of our existing designs. We fit you in a canvas that same day.

JTT: What are the hottest fashion trends you are seeing for men?

SY: I believe that menswear holds onto tradition more than trends. The most important thing for men is having clothing that fits you extremely well and is made to proportions which are the most flattering for your body type. Secondly, the functionality of clothing is important - it must serve the purpose that you need it for; whether that be making you feel good when you put it on, but also that all the pockets and details are in the right spot for maximum functionality. These two things are the foundation of SAVAS and all our garments.

JTT: Suggestions on how to take care of my newly tailored clothes?

SY: Proper storage - good barrel hangers with a full and rounded shoulder, so that things don’t get rumpled. Also, making a great dry cleaner friend!

Savannah’s workshop is located in downtown Nashville at 527 8th Avenue North. Her website is www.ateliersavas.com. And If Santa brings you one of her coats, you’ll know you have been extraordinarily good this year.

Thanks for reading, keep those emails and texts coming. And most importantly, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
